Eight inmates, aged between 13 and 15, fled from Jashore juvenile correction centre early yesterday.

Asraful Islam, superintendent of Jashore police, said the eight were staying at the guard building next to the main building of the correction centre.

They broke the window grills of a bathroom and escaped going down a ladder used for fixing electricity problems, he added.

Zakir Hossain, caretaker of the centre, said the inmates fled around 4:15am. They were from Jashore, Khulna, Narail, Gopalganj and Barisal districts.

He, however, refused to give further details about the eight.

The police superintendent said they were trying to confirm the inmates' whereabouts.

Eighteen inmates of the juvenile correction centre were brutally tortured, allegedly by some staffers and fellow inmates, over a trivial matter on August 13.

Three of the victims died of their wounds and 15 were hospitalised.

Later, a case was filed against five staffers and seven inmates in connection with the incident.
