The immovable property of former member of parliament from Pirojpur AKMA Awal Saydur Rahman has swelled up to about forty times in the last decade, according to an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The increase took place when he was elected member of parliament consecutively for two terms till 2014.

His wife Laila Parveen's immoveable wealth had also increased over six times during the same time frame, reveals the investigation.

Md Ali Akbar, deputy director of the ACC, yesterday filed a case against Awal, who was elected lawmaker of Pirojpur-1 in 2008 and 2014, for illegally amassing Tk 33 crore.

Another case was filed against Laila for illegally amassing Tk 10.98 crore.

The Daily Star obtained copies of First Information Reports.

Analysing the case statement, it was found that before 2008's election, Awal's immoveable property worth about Tk 17.33 lakh.

Between 2008 and 2019, he bought land and flats in many places, including Pirojpur, Dhaka, Gazipur and Khulna. The price of these immoveable property stands at Tk 6.86 crore.

He has a 2,535 sq ft flat in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar worth around Tk 71.3 lakh, an 8.25 decimal land in Baunia worth TK 13.25 lakh, a Rajuk plot worth Tk 33.2 lakh and a 4.54 decimal land worth Tk 60 lakh.

Of the Tk 6.86 crore, Awal in his income tax return file showed Tk 3.62 crore immovable property in his son's and daughter's names, though the sibling declared of having no savings after bearing family expenses.

"It appears that the immoveable property actually belonged to Awal," read the FIR.

The ACC in its investigation found Awal's legal source of income would be only Tk 26.69 lakh but he amassed Tk 33.54 crore.

Therefore, he amassed about Tk 33.27 crore beyond the known source of income, reads the FIR.

Of the illegal wealth, the lawmaker concealed information of about Tk 11.06 crore deposited at different banks under different schemes.

His wife Laila owned land worth around Tk 5.14 lakh before 2008.

On September 15, 2011, Laila built a six-storey building in Mohammadpur at Tk 1.2 crore.

She bought a 1,963 flat in 2017 in Badda at Tk 57 lakh.

In her income tax return file, Laila mentioned herself to be involved in a construction business. "But in the investigation, it [the business] was found to be non-existent," read the FIR.

"While her husband was a lawmaker in two terms -- 2008 and 2014 -- she amassed about Tk 11.05 crore moveable and immoveable property," it reads.

Her legal income was found to be Tk 6.71 lakh from agricultural projects.

"Amassing Tk 10.98 crore beyond the known source of income, Laila committed an offence," according to the FIR.

On December 30, 2019, the ACC filed three separate cases against Awal and Laila for misappropriating government land.

The former lawmaker took lease of government land using fake documents and built a three-storey building on it, which was later rented out to Pirojpur Rural Electricity Cooperative at the rate of Tk 17,250 per month since October 1, 2017, for about three years.

In the second case, Awal was accused of illegally grabbing a government land near Swarupkathi upazila.

In the third case, he was accused of grabbing a 44 decimal pond in Pirojpur town.
