Distraught by husband’s death, woman takes own life

A woman was found dead in Sunamganj’s Jamalganj upazila yesterday, a day after her husband died from electrocution at a construction site.

Body of Niyoti Rani Das, 28, wife of Nibul Das, 29, was found hanging from the ceiling of her in-law’s house in Rampur village yesterday morning.

Nibul had died of electrocution while installing an aluminium window at a construction site in the upazila on Monday afternoon, according to Nurul Islam, sub-inspector at Jamalganj Police Station.

“His body was sent to the Sunamganj District Hospital for autopsy. Yesterday morning, when the family members were about to start for the hospital, Niyoti said that she needed to use the bathroom. She locked from inside the door of a small room adjacent to the bathroom.

“After a while, the family members broke the door and found her body hanging from a bamboo structure inside the room,” the SI said, quoting family members and other locals, who were present at the scene.

“We assume that she committed suicide after hearing about her husband’s death,” Nurul said, adding, “Police recovered her body and sent it to Sunamganj District Hospital for autopsy.”
