Beaten, Humiliated: Mother sues UP chairman, 33 others
The chairman of Harbang Union Parishad and three others were sued yesterday for torturing a woman and her children in Cox's Bazar's Chakaria recently.
The mother -- Parvin Begum -- filed the case against four named and 30 unnamed accused with Chakaria Police Station around 5:00pm, said Md Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station.
The accused named in the first information report (FIR) are UP Chairman Miranul Islam, Nasir Uddin, Nazrul Islam and Jashim Uddin. Parvin mentioned in the FIR that Miranul psychically assaulted them.
According to the case statement, Parvin lives with her family in a rented house in Patiya upazila of Chattogram. On August 21, Parvin along with her son Emran, 21, two daughters Selina Akhter Sheuli, 28, Rozina Akhter, 23, and Emran's friend Chuttu, 27, was going to Rozina's father-in-law's house in Chakaria.
They first went to Keranihut area of Satkania on a microbus. There, they boarded a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to go to Chakaria.
Once they reached near Lal Bridge area of Harbang, some six people on two motorbikes started chasing them. The CNG-run auto rickshaw driver became frightened and took the vehicle near Pahar Chada rail tracks.
At that place, the motorbike riders detained them and started beating them up. The riders also took cell phones, ornaments and cash from the victims.
Later, the attackers tied the victims' hands and waists with rope and paraded them towards the union parishad office, Parvin said in the case statement.
UP Chairman Miranul started rebuking them when they reached his office. He first kicked Parvin's elder daughter Sheuli on the belly and then started beating the victims with a chair, Parvin alleged.
Miranul also beat them with a stick. Around 6:00pm on the day, a police team from Harbang police outpost rescued the family members and admitted them to Chakaria upazila health complex, according to the case statement.
Parvin also alleged that the accused staged a drama to frame them for cattle theft.
Of the accused, police arrested Nasir, Jashim and Nazrul on Monday and produced them before a senior judicial magistrate court in Chakaria. The court later sent them to jail.
OC Habibur Rahman said police were trying to arrest the UP chairman.
UP Chairman Miranul, from his hideout, released a video message and claimed he was in Chattogram at the time of the incident. He claimed that after being told of the incident over phone, he asked police to rescue the family from villagers.
