A court here yesterday placed a local Jamaat leader on six-day remand in connection with the murder of Awami League lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton.
Police arrested Shahidul Islam Mondal, 50, ameer of Sundarganj upazila (east) unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, at his home on Sunday and produced him before the court seeking seven-day remand, said Ashrafuzzaman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sundarganj Police Station.
Shahidul is also the headmaster of Chengmari High School in the upazila's Sreepur union.
The AL lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 was shot dead by unknown assailants inside his Sundarganj home on December 31.
The following day, the MP's sister filed the murder case with Sundarganj Police Station accusing unnamed people.
Meanwhile, people of Sundarganj continued their demonstrations yesterday, demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of Liton's killers.
Shaheed Liton Mancha, a platform of local residents, held a protest rally near Bamondanga Railway Station. Later, a procession was brought out from there.
