Headmaster Assault: Students demand punishment for culprits
Students of Haridev Doyez Uddin High School continued demonstrations yesterday, boycotting classes for two hours to press home their demand for arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers of their headteacher.
More than 200 students of the school at Haridev village in Panchagram union in Sadar upazila refrained from attending classes from 10:00am to 12:00noon and chanted slogans "We want justice for assault of our teacher" on the school premises.
They vowed to continue with boycotting classes until the attackers are arrested.
Earlier on Tuesday, Headteacher Manoranjon Roy was assaulted allegedly by a group of local Awami League supporters led by AL man Abu Siddique over a recruitment row.
Manoranjon came under attack at his office as he refused to help recruit Abu Siddique's selected candidate as a teacher. The gang also beat up some students as they went to save their teacher.
Siddique has been on the run since the incident. He was the president of a ward unit BNP and joined the ruling party two months ago, said local AL men.
Shah Alam, a teacher of the school, said police had assured them of arresting the attackers by Thursday.
"We, the teachers, are upset as the police could not arrest anyone yet," he added.
Abu Ashraf Noor, district education officer, said he visited the school and assured the teachers and students that the attackers would be brought to justice.
"I have been taking care of Manoranjon in the hospital," he said.
Azmol Haque, residential medical officer at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, said the teacher was out of danger but needed treatment for a few more days.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar police, said they had conducted several drives but could not be successful.
"We will try to arrest the attackers by Thursday," the OC said.
