Head-on crash leaves 7 dead in Bogra
Seven people, including five policemen, were killed and five others injured as two trucks collided head-on at Mohipur in the district's Sherpur upazila early yesterday.
The deceased are constable Shajahan Kabir, 26, of Nilphamari's Domar, constable Alamgir Hossain, 25, of Gaibandha's Gobindaganj; constable Pronab Chandra Roy, 33, of Lalmonirhat's Kaliganj; constable Shamsul Alam, 21, of Sirajganj's Ullapara; and constable Sohel Rana, 33, of Gaibandha's Fulchhari; cleaner of Kurigram police lines Shyamol Kumar Das, 32, of Kurigram; and truck driver Abdur Rahman, 30, of Rangpur.
Three of the injured are policemen. They are Sub-inspector Moinul Islam, 33, Assistant Sub-inspector Rubel Chowdhury, 32, and constable Monowar Hossain, 24.
All the deceased and injured policemen were attached to Kurigram police lines.
Tobarok Ullah, superintendent of Kurigram police, said nine policemen, led by Kurigram police lines Sub-inspector Moinul Islam, in a truck were going to Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital for collecting different supplies, including clothes for making uniform, badges and boots.
The accident happened on Bogra-Dhaka highway when the truck crashed into a Bogra-bound fertiliser-laden truck around 1:00am, leaving six people dead on the spot, he said.
Witnesses said after hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and informed police and firefighters about the accident.
Injured Rubel and Monowar, who are undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMCH) in Bogra, said they were sleeping on the flat bed. They suddenly experienced a jolt and lost consciousness and regained it at the hospital.
Contacted, Gaziur Rahman, senior ASP (B circle and media) in Bogra, said after the accident, police and firefighters rescued six wounded and admitted them to the SZMCH. An injured police constable died there later.
SI Moinul Islam was moved to Dhaka for better treatment as he was critically injured.
Nisharul Arif, additional deputy inspector general of police (Rajshahi range), and Arifur Rahman Mondal, additional superintendent of Bogra police, and other high police officials visited the spot and hospital.
Ripon Kumar Modok, assistant superintendent of Kurigram police, who came to Bogra from Kurigram to take the bodies, said after the namaz-e-janaza of the deceased, except constable Pronab and cleaner Shyamol, at Bogra police lines, the victims' bodies were sent to their respective village homes.
A case was filed with Sherpur Police Station in connection with the incident.
A WEDDING NEVER TO HAPPEN
They were all happy when they reached police constable Pranab Chandra's Uttar Ghanasham village in Lalmonirhat yesterday, but little did the fiancée's family know their happiness would soon be shadowed with bereavement.
"It's really bad luck for us, for my daughter," said the fiancée's father.
Pranab's cousin Krishna Lal Roy said they heard about the accident an hour after the incident.
Sadness gripped the villagers over the death, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.
Pranab was the second among his five siblings. He was one of the breadwinners of the family.
Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque expressed deep shock over his death.
