Erroneous visa finally fixed
Baharul Akram Laskar, Indian national from Hailakandi district in Assam, got a separate visa on Saturday a week after he failed to travel to Dhaka due to an unexpected error in the Bangladeshi visa issued earlier.
“Finally, we got the visa corrected from the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala yesterday (Saturday),” Qusar Laskar, elder brother of Baharul, told The Daily Star over the phone last evening.
The two brothers were all set to come to Bangladesh on January 13. They went to Zakiganj border checkpoint in Sylhet, but Baharul was not allowed to enter Bangladesh as the visa issued to him had the last date of entry expired before the issue date of the visa.
Qusar, a school teacher, said earlier that since there is no Bangladesh mission in Assam, they submitted visa applications to the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, the capital of Tripura, through a local broker on December 23 last year.
They got their visas on January 9 and went to Zakiganj port four days later. As they approached the Indian immigration, officials there identified the mistake in Baharul's visa.
The issuance date was “05-02-17 (February 5, 2017)” and the last date of entry “04-01-17 (January 4, 2017)”.
The brothers immediately contacted an official of the high commission by phone, but the official rejected the complaint and blamed them for the error.
They then submitted the passport for correction on January 14.
Suktan Ahmed, an official of the high commission, said the mistake occurred as a large number of visas were issued for people who wanted to attend Biswa Ijtema in Tongi of Gazipur.
He regretted the mistake.
This newspaper earlier ran a report titled “Comedy of error”.
Qusar on his Facebook page thanked The Daily Star for drawing the authorities' attention to the matter.
The brothers have planned to travel to Bangladesh on January 28.
