Ensure safety, security of the Marma sisters
Amnesty International has urged the government to ensure safety and security of the two Marma sisters, one of whom was allegedly raped and the other sexually assaulted by members of security forces in January.
“Ensure immediate safety and security of the two Marma sisters with their consultation and consent and launch investigation into the sexual assault on them,” Amnesty said in an open letter on March 6.
The sisters -- aged 18 and 13 -- were admitted to a hospital on January 22. Earlier that day, the elder one was allegedly raped while the other sexually assaulted during a drive by a team of security forces in their village in Rangamati.
Addressed to State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, the letter stated that the sisters were staying at an accommodation of a ruling party leader in a restricted environment, contrary to their request of shelter.
“Amnesty International is in possession of a letter signed by the elder sister, requesting that she be released in custody of Raja Devasish Roy, the Chakma Circle Chief,” the letter added.
Release them to a safe and secure custody of their choice and ensure that they have access to appropriate health-care and counselling, it urged.
