Earn trust of people
President Abdul Hamid yesterday asked the new Election Commission to carry out its duty transparently to gain people's confidence.
He also urged the newly constituted EC to perform its job, taking assistance of political parties and other concerned stockholders to hold elections in a free, fair and impartial manner.
"Election is an essential element in the democratic process. And cooperation from all political parties and people is a must to hold elections in a free, fair and credible manner," the president said when the chief election commissioner and four other election commissioners called on him at the Bangabhaban in the afternoon.
Talking to The Daily Star after the meeting, Joynal Abedin, press secretary of the president, quoted Hamid as saying.
"The president hoped that the new election commission will perform their duties with accountability and transparency," said Joynal.
UNB adds: on the other hand, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said the Election Commission would try its best to perform its constitutional responsibility bestowed on them sincerely and transparently.
The CEC also expressed its determination to carry out their duties properly and in a responsible manner to win people's confidence.
During the meeting, Nurul sought all-out cooperation from the president to discharge their duties properly.
Four election commissioners -- Mahbub Talukder, Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury -- and EC Secretary Md Abdullah were, among others, present at the meeting.
