DU dismisses 'question leak'
Dhaka University authorities have been denying allegations that its admission test questions had been leaked.
Reports in the media of leaked questions of the university's Gha unit have dismayed many students who sat for the tests on Friday.
But DU authorities were yet to take any step to probe into the allegations.
“It is a rumour and conspiracy against the university,” DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman said, ruling out the possibility of forming a probe body to investigate the matter.
Authorities would find out and take steps against people spreading the rumour and trying to destabilise the university, he added.
“I heard the news of a leak from a journalist three hours after the exam was over. We did not get complaints from any admission seeker, so we are considering it as a false allegation.”
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court yesterday placed two Bangladesh Chhatra League men and an admission seeker, arrested on suspicion of leaking the question papers, on a four-day remand.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhtar passed the order when Mohibul Islam, senior assistant superintended of police, produced the trio before the court.
A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station under Public Exam Law and Information Technology Act against them on Friday.
BCL men Mohiuddin Rana and Abdullah Al Mamun were detained by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police from two DU dormitories on Friday.
The third arrestee, Ishrak Ahmed Rafi, was arrested at an exam hall.
A mobile court also jailed 12 examinees under “Gha” unit for a month each for using an electronic device during the one-hour exam that began at 10:00am.
A number of students alleged that some admission seekers received e-mails containing questions of the English part of the test around eight hours prior to the exam.
Copies of the answers to these questions were sent to the phones of some admission seekers around 9:30am, many said.
The Daily Star obtained a copy of the e-mail, containing 24 MCQ questions, which was sent at 3:19am on Friday. Each of the questions in the e-mail matched those of the actual question paper.
VC Akhtaruzzaman, when asked about the e-mails, said an IT expert was consulted who assured them that this type of screenshots or e-mails could be manipulated.
Prof Sadeka Halim, acting dean of Social Science faculty, yesterday sent a rejoinder protesting reports published on different newspapers.
The question papers are prepared and printed in such a confidential manner that there is no scope for leaking the question the night before the test, she claimed.
Meanwhile, DU Somajtantrik Chhatra Front unit would demonstrate on campus today demanding cancellation of the admission tests and exemplary punishment of those involved.
Additional Special Superintendent Minhazul Islam of the CID told The Daily Star that there was a large network, not a group of one or two, behind the crime.
He added that they were trying to catch everyone involved and the arrestees already mentioned a few names.
