Doctor sued for 'raping' patient

A doctor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University has been sued over allegedly raping his patient, a college student from Bhola, in a hospital room.

Accused Riad Siddique, 42, a dermatologist at the hospital, has been absconding since the victim's father filed a rape case with Shahbagh Police Station yesterday.

Quoting the first information report, Officer-in-charge (investigation) Zafar Ali Biswas told The Daily Star that the physician used to go for private practice in Bhola every Friday.

There, the girl, who had been suffering from skin problem, came to see the doctor.

At one point, Riad asked the girl to come to Dhaka for better treatment, the OC said.

On her arrival, the doctor confined her to a room on the third floor of Block-B of the hospital and raped her on December 31 last year, the police official said, quoting the FIR.

The accused also threatened to kill the victim if she disclosed the incident, he added.

The girl, however, informed her aunt about the incident and was subsequently admitted to the One-stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on January 4.

“Forensic test has found primary evidence of rape,” said Bilkis Begum, coordinator of the OCC.
