Disciplining drivers may save lives
Preventing drivers from speeding can save thousands of lives in Bangladesh every year, said road safety advocates yesterday.
Citing data of Accident Research Centre of Buet, they said road accidents claim, on average, 12,000 lives annually and injure 35,000 people.
Members of the road safety advocacy group Nirapad Sarak Chai were addressing a campaign at the capital's Kadamtala School and College to disseminate the importance of following traffic rules.
Chairman of the group and popular actor Ilias Kanchan advised the students to always prioritize road safety above everything else.
According to an analysis based on the reports published in The Daily Star from January 2010 to august last year, at least 8,270 people died in road accidents during the period, meaning at least five people died every day. Of the five, about four were aged between 14 and 50.
During the same period, at least 21,886 people were injured in 5,674 accidents. Many of them later succumbed to their injuries while some others became disabled.
In observance of the United Nations' Global Road Safety Week, Nirapad Sarak Chai started a weeklong awareness campaign on Monday.
