Cardiac Diseases: World class treatment available at home

Say physicians

Fifty-five-year-old MA Baki was admitted to Labaid Cardiac Hospital with cardiac problem a few days ago. He was then diagnosed with rare disease -- Coronary Total Occlusion.

Yesterday, two renowned cardiac surgeons Parveen Chandra of India and Mahbubor Rahman of Bangladesh performed his surgery at the hospital.

Physicians attending the 6th international conference on "Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery and 4th Dhaka Live 2017" witnessed the operation via videoconference from a city hotel. They had also an opportunity to interact with the two doctors during the surgery.

"It gives the doctors to have a hands-on experience of such a critical operation," Dr AM Shamim, managing director of Labaid Group, told The Daily Star yesterday.

Labaid Cardiac Hospital organised the three-day conference beginning on Thursday.

Renowned cardiologists from home and abroad, doctors and other healthcare professionals are taking part in the conference and sharing updates on heart health.

Like Baki, there would be 22 complicated and rare cardiac surgeries by renowned cardiologists in the hospital, and the participants will gain experience by witnessing those via videoconference.

Thirty-two foreign doctors and around 1,200 local cardiologists have so far participated in the conference, which was first held in 2005.

In the conference, foreign consultants and experts are making their presentations and talking about the new technology and its usage, said Shamim.

Organised for updating the country's physicians on modern cardiac treatment, the conference will help build a relationship between the foreign and local experts and share knowledge between them.

Shamim said he believed that all kinds of cardiac disease treatment were possible in the country. Labaid Hospital as well as many other hospitals was now providing world class cardiac treatment.

Of the country's 1,200 cardiologists taking part in the conference, 80 percent are working at different government hospitals and they are working outside Dhaka. So, when they acquire knowledge on the new medical technology, they can spread it across the country, he said.

Shamim said, “Labaid may treat 500 patients in a month, but this initiative [conference] will help provide modern treatment to around 50,000 people. Our aim is to ensure better and modern treatment facility of the cardiac patients in Bangladesh.”
