Businessman shot dead
A businessman has been shot dead. Police recovered his body at Mirpur in the capital yesterday morning.
Relatives suspect Rafiqul Islam Junayed, owner of a residential hotel in Bishil area near Mirpur-1, was killed by extortionists. He was also a shareholder in a real estate company.
Faruqul Alam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Darussalam Police Station, said the body was first noticed in front of Paikpara Government Staff Quarter Mosque by some locals who were going to say their Fazr prayers.
It was lying on the footpath and had a bullet wound on the left side of the chest, he said.
Talking to this correspondent who visited the area later at noon, Abu Musa, muezzin of the mosque, said he had noticed some dried blood on the victim's shirt.
Sub-inspector Tahmudul Islam of Darussalam Police Station said there was a small quantity of blood on the spot, indicating that the murder was committed somewhere else.
Sayed Hossain Sohag believed that his brother lost his life for refusing to pay extortion money.
He said they shifted to Tularbagh area from South Bishil as some criminals fired three to four shots at their old home a few years ago. “They did that because we refused to pay them the money they had demanded.”
He, however, could not say whether someone had demanded extortion money from Junayed recently.
Sohag said a torn cheque for Tk 306,000 was found in the pocket of his brother.
The cheque was issued by Oasis Real Estate, the company where Junayed was a shareholder.
He said feud with anyone over Junayed's real estate business could also be the reason behind the murder. He could not elaborate on the reason of his claim.
Shah Alam, manager of the hotel owned by Junayed, said the victim went missing after coming out of the building around 12:30am today.
Both of his two mobile sets are still missing, he added.
A case was filed and police were investigating.
