Attack On B'baria Hindus: Police probe for action against 2 errant cops
A police probe committee, formed to investigate the recent attack on the Hindus in Brahmanbaria, recommended punitive actions against two inspector-level officers deployed there.
The four-member committee led by Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain said there was a conflict between two factions of local politicians. A third party took the opportunity and instigated the attack.
Sakhawat, also the additional deputy inspector general of Chittagong range, said the local administration made a mistake by approving the rally which was used by the group that instigated the attack.
His probe body submitted its report to the police headquarters in Dhaka yesterday afternoon.
“We have submitted the report in the afternoon to the headquarters and suggested punitive measures against two inspector level officers for their fault,” said Sakhawat.
He refused to identify the policemen.
Sakhawat said they have identified 15 to 20 people of the group that instigated and led the attack. He refused to identify them for the sake of investigation.
About the controversial Facebook image which allegedly triggered the mayhem, the probe committee chief said the same image was uploaded and shared by another person two days prior to the post of Rasraj, who is now in jail, and was shared numerous times by that person.
“The account from which the image was made viral indicates the location of the person was Kuwait. Our team is working on whether it was a fake account,” said Sakhawat.
He said the mobile phone of Rasraj Das was sent to the forensic lab to find out whether the controversial image was uploaded from his mobile phone or someone had stolen his password and uploaded the image from another device.
Contacted Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque said he was yet to get the report.
The probe committee also issued 30 recommendations to prevent such incidents. They include investigating previous such incidents in Brahmanbaria and ensuring punishment of the perpetrators in those cases, taking precautions in approving rallies, increasing communication between grassroots and police-administration officials, creating awareness among people so that they do not get instigated with fake images, increasing communication between religious leaders of different communities with administration and police.
The committee was formed on November 1 to find out how the mayhem occurred, the role of administration and propose recommendations to prevent such incidents. The committee was asked to file the report within seven days.
The district police and the deputy commissioner's office also formed two separate probe bodies on October 31.
The committees were asked to submit their reports within 10 working days, but they failed to do so.
