Another Magura arson victim dies
Another victim of Magura arson attack died at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday, raising the death toll from the gruesome incident to five.
Imran Mollah, 30, who had 50 percent of his body burnt and got his respiratory tract damaged, died at the burn unit's intensive care unit (ICU) around 6:00am, said hospital and family sources.
He was the driver of the truck that was set afire by alleged pro-blockaders on the Magura-Jessore highway in Salikha of Magura on March 22.
A trucker for four years, Imran came out of financial hardship barely a year ago and built a small house of his own, said his relative Fazlur Rahman. Earlier, he lived with his father and brothers in an extended family.
“With his death, his family will be in deep trouble,” added Fazlur.
He was the father of two -- a daughter with the first wife whom he divorced around five years ago, and a son with the second. “Although his daughter lives with her maternal grandparents, Imran took great care of her,” said the relative.
Imran's brother-in-law Yadul, 25, who received burn injuries in the same incident, died at the burn unit of the DMCH on March 25.
Earlier, Matin Biswas, Rawshan Ali, and Shakil Ahmed, who also suffered burns in the incident, died in the hospital.
A total of nine people received serious burns in the incident.
The rest four victims are taking treatment at the DMCH burn unit as their condition is still critical, said Partha Shankar Pal, resident surgeon at the burn unit.
With Imran, at least 95 people have so far been killed, mostly in arson attacks, since the BNP-led alliance called a countrywide indefinite blockade on January 5.
