5 hurt in clash between DU, DMC students
At least five were injured during a clash between the students of Dhaka Medical College and Dhaka University in the capital's Bakshi Bazar area last night.
The injured -- Riaz of Islamic studies and Mainul of history of DU -- were undergoing treatment at the university medical centre, while the injured DMC student, Al Amin, was taking treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Riaz and Mainul are students of Salimullah Muslim Hall and Al Amin is the general secretary of Dr Fazle Rabbi Hall unit BCL. The other injured could not be identified immediately.
Witnesses said an altercation broke out between four DMC students and some DU students over sitting at a table at the Penang Restaurant on the Bakshibazar intersection at around 10:00 pm.
At one stage, a DU student slapped one of the DMC students.
Incensed, the DMC students went back to their dorm, returned with fellow students and attacked the DU students, leaving two of them injured.
The DU students, on the other hand, informed their hallmates over the phone and a large number of students from SM hall went to spot and chased the DMC students and beat them up.
The clash, which later spread to the adjacent areas, was continuing till filing of this report at 1:00am, said Kamrul Hasan, inspector (investigation) of Chawk Bazar Police Station.
Meanwhile, a Jamuna TV camera person was assaulted while covering the news; his camera was snatched away by the students, according to the TV channel.
