31 killed in road crashes in 3 days
At least 31 people, including two policemen, were killed and 74 others injured in separate road accidents across the country during the three-day Eid holidays.
One of the accidents was in Sheorapara area of the capital on Wednesday that killed an elderly couple.
Most of the accidents were a result of head-on collisions between buses, microbuses, human hauliers, CNG-run auto-rickshaws and motorcycles.
Last year, at least 30 people were killed and 54 others injured during the same holidays while in 2014 at least 26 people were killed in road accidents across the country during Eid-ul-Azha. The death toll was 10 in 2013, 40 in 2012 and 46 in 2011, according to The Daily Star reports.
The number of casualties was prepared on the basis of reports published in this newspaper. However, the actual number might be higher as many accidents go unreported.
In Dhaka, elderly couple -- Ataur Rahman, 70, and his wife Rawshan Ara, 60 -- were killed when a car hit them in Sheorapara area of the capital around 6:30am on Wednesday, police said.
Two people were killed and 17 others sustained injuries when a Gaibandha-bound coach from Dhaka smashed into a roadside tree and then fell into a ditch at Saterpara on Palashbari-Gaibandha road, reports our Gaibandha correspondent.
The deceased were identified as Dukhu Mia, 27, of Fulchari and Morsheda, 23, of Khamarpara in Gaibandha Sadar. The injured were taken to Palashbari Health Complex.
At least five people including a police constable were killed and 10 others were injured in separate road mishaps in Pabna and Sirajganj district during the Eid holidays, reports our Pabna correspondent.
In Pabna, three people were killed and five others were injured when a bus hit a human haulier on Pabna-Rajshahi highway at Majidpur in Sadar upazila Monday night.
Two of the deceased were identified as Abdul Gazfur, 27, a resident of Pabna Sadar, and Shariat Khan, 35, of Chouhali in Sirajganj. Identity of the other victim could not be known.
In Sirajganj a police constable was killed in a road mishap in Ullapara upazila of the district while going to work on a motorbike Wednesday morning.
The deceased Md Abu Musa, 35, from Afra of Santhia, was a constable at Sirajganj Sadar Police Station.
Another man was killed and five others were injured when two buses collided head on at Saydabad area near the Bangabandhu Bridge Monday morning.
An auto-rickshaw driver was killed as a bus hit it at Rupali area on Barisal-Patuakhali highway Wednesday night, reports our Barisal correspondent.
The deceased Riaz Talukder, 22, was from Birangal in Bakerganj upazila of Barisal.

The deceased were identified as Ramjan Ali, 60, and Abdul Gaffar, 60, of Rajbari village and Rozina Akhter, 22, of Prannagar village of the upazila.
A motorcyclist was killed in a road accident on Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid Land Port highway at Pukuria of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Wednesday, our correspondent reports.
