2 murdered in city flat

Garo mother, daughter the victims

Assailants murdered two Garo women at their rented flat in the capital's Kalachandpur area last night, police said.

The deceased are Besat Moni Chiran, 65, and her daughter Sujata Chiran, 35, said Assistant Commissioner Gulshan Zone Rafiqul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Sujata was butchered and her mother strangled on the fourth floor of the seven-storey building, Rafiqul told The Daily Star last night.

“We visited the spot and afterwards sent the bodies to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College for autopsies.”

A team of Criminal Investigation Department collected evidence from the spot.

Tlester Daring, husband of Sujata's eldest daughter, was the first to be alerted to the murder when he went to the flat in 58/2 Kalachandpur from his workplace around 7:00pm.

He found the door locked from outside. Opening it, he found a blood-stained Sujata lying on the floor, said Nikhil, a relative of Tlester, who was with him at that time.

Tlester then spotted the blood-stained body of his mother-in-law kept under the bed.

Nikhil said Tlester immediately took his son, who was in the flat, and rushed to the security guard Abdur Razzak and charged him for the murder. Razzak told him that he had no knowledge of the crime.

Tlester then called his father-in-law Ashish Mankhin, who was at his workplace. Later, they called police, who immediately sealed the flat to collect evidence and then sent the bodies to the morgue.

Police said they collected footage from the CCTV camera of the building where they found four youths, including Sanjit, son of Sujata's sister, entering the flat around 4:00pm.

“We are primarily suspecting their involvement in the murder,” a police officer told The Daily Star.

Jahangir Alam, son of the flat owner, told reporters that Sujata, her three daughters, and her eldest daughter's husband, Tlester Daring, and his two-year old son, had been living there for one and a half years. They all hail from Haluaghat of Mymensingh.

“They have been living there peacefully. I don't have any knowledge of any dispute in the family,” Jahangir said.

Elsewhere, a salesman was stabbed to death allegedly by a “mentally challenged” man in the city's Indira Road area under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station yesterday evening.

The deceased, Julhas, 50, was a salesman at a construction material shop on Indira Road, GG Biswas, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told The Daily Star.

The man stabbed Julhas at his shop around 7:00pm, the OC said, adding that police detained the attacker.

The victim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by one Md Alam, a tea-stall owner, where doctors declared him dead.

His body was kept at the DMC morgue, Biswas added.

Masud Raja, owner of the shop, said Julhas was the caretaker and also used to manage the shop.

The attacker has been living on the streets in the area for around one and a half years, the OC added.
