Abbasuddin Int'l Bhawaiya Festival ends in Rangpur
The three-day long spellbinding Abbasuddin International Bhawaiya Festival 2018 ended in the early hours of Sunday.
The festival was organised in memory of Bhawaiya king Abbasuddin Ahmed.
Asadduzzaman Noor, Cultural Affairs Minister, inaugurated the festival as chief guest at the Public Library compound in Rangpur on Thursday. Moshiur Rahman Ranga, State Minister for Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry, and Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, mayor of Rangpur City Corporation, were present at the inaugural ceremony.
Besides, Nadira Begum, president of Bhawaiya Sangsad in Dhaka, noted singers Mostafa Zaman Abbasi, Siraj Uddin, Professor Joyanta Kumar Barman, a teacher of University of Sikkim, India; Sangita Roy, a professor of Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, discussed the significance of Bhawaiya songs at the programme.
A colourful procession was brought out in Rangpur city on Thursday.
The songs -- “Oki Garial Bhai Hakao Gari Tui Chilmarir Bondore”, “Rongoroshe Bhorpur Hamar Bari Rangpur”, “Rangpur-e Jan”, “Hamar Anginat Bosi Tomora Suni Aysen Bhawaiya Gaan” and more -- captivated the audience. The event also included performances of folk dance.
Nur Jahan Begum of Hanumantola area of Rangpur city said, “Such songs in the local dialect of Rangpur region have a strong connection with the people. She hoped that such cultural programmes would be held annually.
Biplob Proshad, joint convener of the festival committee, said that Bhawaiya songs are the rich folk musical genre of Rangpur region, but it now touches the hearts of millions of people around the globe.
Moksutul Rahman Muku, a member of the committee, said that around 400 artistes from Bangladesh and India performed at the festival. Bhawaiya singers of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Assam, Jalpaiguri and Kolkata performed at the festival alongside other singers from Rangpur, Dinajpur, Dhaka, Joypurhat and Thakurgaon.
The Cultural Affairs Ministry and Bhawaiya Sangsad in Dhaka jointly supported the festival.
