AL spent only half its income last year
The ruling Awami League spent only half of its income last year, contrary to the BNP which spent almost three times its income during the same period.
The ruling party earned Tk 120 million while it spent Tk 6o million last year, sources in the party confirmed it to The Daily Star.
AL leaders would submit the report to the Election Commission today, sources said.
Party chief Sheikh Hasina finalised the report in a meeting with some party leaders at the Gono Bhaban last night.
Sources said the meeting was attended, among others, by AL Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Deputy Office Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das and Assistant Secretary ABM Reazul Kabir Kawsar.
According to sources, the main source of the party's income in the year was from selling nomination papers for the January 5 national election and nomination papers for reserved seats for women, which amounted to almost Tk 65 million. Other sources of income included subscription fees from its central committee members, advisory council members, national executive council, lawmakers, members and well-wishers, and sales of books and old papers, and interests from bank deposits.
Besides, a considerable portion of the party's income came from the AL lawmakers, elected unopposed, who had donated Tk 10 lakh each before the January 5 polls under the directive of the party chief. A total of 127 MPs were elected unopposed in the polls.
Sources said the party's expenditure covered election campaigns, maintenance of its Dhanmondi office and its central office at Bangabandhu Avenue, salaries of employees at party offices, publication of “Uttaran”, the official mouthpiece of the party, publication of Ashomapto Attojiboni (Unfinished Memoirs) written by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, organising party programmes, printing banners and festoons, advertisements, conducting relief activities etc.
In 2012 the party earned Tk 100 million and spent Tk 90 million.
The AL has also around Tk 90 million deposited in the Mercantile Bank, Trust Bank and UCBL Bank.
All the registered parties have to submit their annual audit reports certified by a registered chartered accountant firm within July 31 of the following year, according to Political Parties Registration Rule, 2008.
The AL failed to submit its audit reports within the deadline and sought an extension of time till September 1.
The BNP submitted its annual financial report on August 14, where the party showed that its annual income was Tk 76,05,761 while its expenditure was Tk 2,27,00,362 in 2013.
The party's income last year came down significantly compared to 2012. The party's income and expenditure in 2012 stood at Tk 1,79,12,231 and Tk 2,26,93,143 respectively.
