8 cops hurt in anti-polls activists' attack
Eight police personnel and two presiding officers were injured when anti-election activists attacked several polling centres in Lalmonirhat, Jhenidah and Bogra in an attempt to thwart today's general election.
Meanwhile, more than 25 crude bombs were blasted at different polling centers in Bogra, Jessore, Rajshahi, Chittagong and Jhenidah.
Miscreants looted ballot boxes from four polling stations in Jessore and torched a police vehicle in Chittagong.
In Kurigram, police recovered 13 petrol bombs near the house of a local Awami League activist in Sadar upazila.
So far, the Election Commission has postponed polls at 160 polling centres across the country due to arson attacks and snatching of ballot papers and boxes.
LALMONIRHAT
Anti-election activists torched three polling centers -- Vandardah, Kuchlibari and Jamuna government primary schools -- at Kuchlibari in Patgram upazila in seven hours till 7:30am.
Being resisted, the attackers beat up three lawmen and a presiding officer at Vandardah Government Primary School and snatched all the ballot boxes from the centre.
Voting at the three polling stations has been postponed following the incidents.
BOGRA
Two police constables and a presiding officer received splinter injuries when opposition men hurled several crude bombs during a clash with law enforcers in Gabtoli upazila this morning.
One of the injured was identified as Dalal, a constable of Gabtoli Police Station.
The clash ensued when opposition men blasted a crude bomb and vandalised election materials including ballot boxes at Gabtoli Pilot High School in the upazila headquarters around 9:30am.
The attackers also asked the presiding officers and voters to leave the place immediately.
On-duty Rapid Action Battalion and policemen fired 100 rubber bullets during the 30-minute clash.
In face of law enforcers' resistance, the attackers exploded several more crude bombs.
JHENIDAH
Three policemen of Kotchandpur Police Station were stabbed by opposition activists at Mamunshia polling centre in the upazila last night.
Meanwhile, the anti-polls activists set fire to the polling centre burning the ballot papers, reports our Jhenidah correspondent quoting M Shahjahan Ali, OC of Kotchandpur Police Station.
The injured -- SI Milon Hossain and constables Jamirul Islam and Ohidul Islam -- are undergoing treatment at Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex.
The law enforces came under attack when at least 60 opposition men blasted 16 crude bombs at Mamunshia polling centre around 10:00pm, said the OC.
They stabbed the three policemen before leaving the place, said Altaf Hossain, superintendent of police.
Meanwhile, miscreants hurled hand bombs at the office of Kotchandpur Railway Station Master last night, said station master Anisur Rahman.
None was hurt during the explosion, which only gutted some furniture, he said.
The miscreants also blasted bombs at four polling centers in Kotchandpur, one each in Kailganj, Moheshpur and Sailkupa upazila last night.
JESSORE
Miscreants blasted eight crude bombs at polling centers set up at eight government primary schools in Monirumpur and Jhikorgachha upazilas between 11:30pm yesterday and 6:00am today.
Of them, three crude bombs explosion were reported at three polling stations in Monirumpur upazila while five in five centers in Jhikorgachha.
Meanwhile, miscreants looted ballot boxes from four polling centers of Monirumpur upazila.
RAJSHAHI
BNP-Jamaat men blasted at least 10 crude bombs at Joypur Government Primary School polling centre in Charghat upazila when they tried to seize the polling centre around 9:30am, said Shahjahan Ali, inspector of Charghat Police Station.
They left the scene immediately after being chased by the law enforcers, the police official said.
None was injured in the explosion.
CHITTAGONG
A gang of masked men torched a stationed mini-truck requisitioned by police and exploded four crude bombs in front of Mandaritola Government Primary School in Sitakunda upazila around 11:15am.
Police fired several gunshots to disperse the attackers, said AK Mostafiz, a sub-inspector of Sitakunda Police Station.
Law enforcers detained two of the attackers -- Anowar Hossain and Rabiul Hossain -- from the spot while others fled away.
Meanwhile, a crude bomb was blasted on the premises of Bakulia Government High School in the port city around 12:25pm, said Nazmul, an SI of Bakulia Police Station.
KURIGRAM
Police recovered 13 patrol bombs from in front of a house of a local AL man at Muktaram village in Sadar upazila around 10:30am, said Abdul Gafur, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station.
