7 candidates boycott polls
Seven including five BNP-backed chairman candidates in Barisal, Bagerhat, Feni and Shariatpur districts boycotted today's upazila election alleging ouster of their agents and voters at different centres by ruling party men.
Meanwhile, the local authorities suspended voting at a centre in Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni and another centre in Monirampur of Jessore as the ruling Awami League men allegedly snatched ballot papers and boxes.
In Mymensingh, the authorities suspended the presiding officer due to negligence of duty.
The voting in 81 upazila parishads of 41 districts in the country that began at 8:00am today in the third phase of the local government elections will continue till 4:00pm without any break.
BARISAL
BNP-blessed chairman candidate Abdur Sattar Khan in Muladi upazila boycotted the election citing vote rigging, reports our Barisal correspondent.
Addressing a press conference this morning he claimed that their agents and voters have been ousted from the polling centres by the ruling party men.
BAGERHAT
BNP-supported chairman candidate Abdul Majid Jabbar in Morolganj upazila boycotted the election alleging that ruling party men ousted his agents from all the polling centres in the area.
SHARIATPUR
In Shariatpur BNP backed chairman candidate Mahbub Morshed and woman vice chairman Nazma Akter boycotted election alleging ouster of their agents and voters at different centres by ruling party men, reports Prothom Alo.
FENI
The authorities suspended voting at Olatoli Government Primary School polling centre in Daganbhuiyan upazila after ruling party men allegedly snatched ballot papers and boxes from the centre.
However, three chairman candidates including a BNP-supported candidate and a AL rebel candidate, six vice-chairman candidates and two women vice-chairman candidates alleged vote rigging by ruling party men.
The ruling party men blocked the centre around 4:00am and snatched all the ballot papers, reports our Feni correspondent.
As the news spread, BNP supporters attacked the centre and vandalised it, said Abdul Haiyum, presiding officer of the centre.
Ruling party man allegedly drove BNP supported agents out from all the poling centres in the upazila, Akbar Hossain, BNP-backed chairman candidate alleged.
MYMENSINGH
In Mymensingh, the authorities suspend a presiding officer for not staying at the polling centre at night.
Khairul Hasan, presiding officer of Chondokona Government Primary School centre in Dhubaura upazila was absent at polling centre at night.
JESSORE
The authorities suspended voting at Hazrakathi Government Primary School polling centre in Monirampur upazila after miscreants snatched ballot papers and boxes from the centre.
