6 to walk gallows for killing 3 Bagerhat law enforcers
A Bagerhat court today sentenced six people to death and seven others to life term imprisonment for killing three members of Bangladesh Coast Guard and Rapid Action Battalion.
District and Sessions Judge SM Solaiman also acquitted two other accused as allegations brought against them were not proved.
All the convicts were tried in absentia, reports our Bagerhat correspondent.
Rafiqul Islam Sheikh, Kuddus Sheikh and his brother Idris Sheikh and Babul Sheikh of Morelganj upazila in Bagerhat and Alkas Fakir and Ilias Sheikh of Khulna district were awarded the capital punishment.
The seven convicts who received life term imprisonment are Reazul Sheikh, Akram Shikh, Alam Sheikh, Badsha Sheikh, Jamal Sheikh, Kamal alias Sumon Sheikh of Morelganj and Aslam Sheikh of Batiaghata upazila of Khulna.
According to the prosecution, a joint team of Rab-6 and Mongla coast guard conducted a drive to arrest a gang of robbers in the Pashur river of Mongla upazila on December 9, 2006.
During a scuffle, the bandits jumped into the river along with MH Kabir and MA Islam of Rab and PC Kanchan of coast guard.
Their bodies were recovered from the river on the following day.
