5 Shibir men held for attacking CU teachers
Police arrested five activists of Chittagong University unit Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, this afternoon following crude bomb attack on the university’s teachers.
At least 15 teachers sustained injuries as Shibir activists allegedly hurled crude bombs targeting two university buses carrying the teachers near the campus this morning.
The arrestees are Md Akteruzzaman, 22, Sabbir Hawladar, 22, Md Yusuf, 23, Imran Ali, 25 and Md Tauhid, 23, Md Shahidullah, additional superintendent of police, Chittagong (North), told The Daily Star.
Two of them were arrested from the spot and the rest from Chhararkul and Fatehabad areas of Hathazari upazila in this connection, the SP said.
“The arrestees are students of different departments of the university, two of them admitted to their involvement in the attack,” he added.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League of CU unit blockaded road at Sholoshahar Gate no 2 intersection at around 3:30pm protesting the attack on the teachers.
Then the BCL activists brought out a procession that paraded the city streets. A rally was organised at Sholoshahar Rialway Station afterwards.
On information, police from Panchlaish Police Station rushed to the spot and dispersed them from the road at around 4:00pm.
Contacted, SM Ariful Islam, a leader of CU unit BCL, said they demanded exemplary punishment of the “Shibir cadres” who attacked on the teachers.
In the wake of the attack, CU syndicate, the highest decision making body of the university, in an emergency meeting condemned the attack.
Demanding exemplary punishment of the perpetrators, the university authorities also assured of bearing all medical expenditures of the wounded teachers.
“The syndicate has taken decision to continue with academic activities without any disruption and entrust police to conduct drive in the dormitories at any time,” said Dr Imran Hossain, a member of CU syndicate.
Teachers’ reaction
Shrabonti Saha, a lecturer of Biochemistry who narrowly escaped injury, “We were going to the university to teach them, to reduce their session jam... How can they attack on us?”
Kamrul Hasan, joint secretary of Chittagong University Teachers’ Association (CUTA), who also narrowly escaped injury, said, “We have requested the vice-chancellor to take measure for the security of students and teachers.”
