444 pry teachers yet to get six months' arrears
Four hundred and forty-four teachers of 78 government primary schools in Harinakundu upazila under the district did not get their salary for six months from January to June of 2013 as the upazila education officer concerned did not submit the relevant documents in time.
The 78 schools, earlier having the status of non-government registered primary schools, were nationalised like the others of the same category, as per a government declaration.
Meanwhile, the teachers nationalised primary schools of five others upazilas in the district duly received their salary from the government coffers for the same period.
Some of the affected teachers of Harinakundu upazila alleged that although the upazila primary education officer did not submit their documents to the higher authorities in time to take necessary steps for their six months' salary, a few staff of the primary education office had collected Tk 200 from each teacher in the name of ensuring the allocation.
Mokhlesur Rahman, Harinakundu upazila primary education officer, admitted failure to submit the teachers' documents and said, "I did not receive any allocation for the 444 teachers' salary for the period from January to June 2013."
He refuted the allegation of taking bribe by any staff of the office from any teacher of those 78 schools.
Contacted, District Primary Education Officer Shib Pada Dey said, "The teachers are supposed to receive their six months' salary as arrears if allocation is made. But for the purpose, the upazila primary education officer concerned has to apply to the Directorate of Primary Education in Dhaka."
