4 die in Ctg train-bus collision
Four female garment workers were killed and 15 injured as a train hit a minibus carrying the apparel workers at an unmanned level crossing in Chandgaon of Chittagong city this morning.
M Shahidullah, assistant deputy commissioner (North Zone) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, confirmed the death to The Daily Star.
The deceased were identified as Ria Akter, 30, Yasmin Akter, 19, Julie Akter and Sweetie.
The minibus helper, Didarul Alam, was detained from the spot soon after the accident.
Meanwhile, Chittagong east zone railway has formed a five-member committee to probe the incident. The body was asked to submit its report in shortest possible time.
The accident occurred around 8:00am when the minibus, carrying the workers of Base Textile, was crossing Bahir Signal at Chandgaon, less than half kilometre off the factory.
The driver of the bus failed to hear the whistle of the train as he was listening music on headphone, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting the injured workers.
The train hit and dragged the vehicle 40 yards off the spot after it got stuck on the railway tracks, witnesses said.
Five of the injured are now undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) while others admitted to local clinics.
Engineer Monowar Shahadat, chairman of Base Textile, told The Daily Star that they have urged the local authorities several times to set up a level crossing in the area to avoid accident but they did not pay heed.
The train was going to Sholoshahar of the city from Dohazari in Chandanaish upazila.
