31 members of dope gangs jailed in city
Some 31 members of six dope gangs have been awarded different terms of jail following arrest from different places in the capital on Wednesday night.
Detective Branch (DB) of police nabbed them after raiding Paltan, Gulistan, Kamalapur, Mohakhali, Airport and Mirpur areas. They were given imprisonment from one month to two years, said DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police yesterday.
Executive magistrates M Abdul Kuddus and Sarwoer Alam of the DMP passed the sentences, he told reporters at a press briefing at the DMP media centre.
Detectives also seized around 950 pieces of banned drug Ativan, usually used to dope people by mixing with food, and Tk 50 thousand in cash from their possession.
They first caught Ativan drug peddler Mizanur Rahman Pintu from the capital's Fakirapool area. He used to smuggle the contraband item, mainly made in Pakistan, into the country and supply it to the dope gangs at a higher price, said Monirul.
Obtaining information from Mizanur, detectives held the 30 others.
The DMP spokesperson said the tablets have no odour and colour. So, victims cannot realise when these are mixed with food.
A section of a gang dopes people at bus stands, rail stations, crowded public places or inside vehicles by feeding them food mixed with sedatives.
Other members of the gang start following the people who took the food and finally rob them when they become unconscious. “At least 10 more such groups remain active in the capital. Police are trying to arrest them,” said the DB official.
Earlier, all the convicts were arrested in different times and were released on bail. After getting bail, they commit the same crime, Monirul added.
