3 Teknaf cops hurt in gunfight with traffickers
Three police personnel including two sub-inspectors sustained bullet wounds during a gunfight with a gang of human traffickers in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar this morning.
Police arrested Abul Fayez, one of the traffickers, after the gunfight, Didar Ferdous, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Teknaf Police Station, told The Daily Star.
The injured are: Nurunnabi, 40, and Nayan Barua, 33,--two sub-inspectors--and Afzal Hossain, 27, a constable, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent.
Acting on information that traffickers were sending a group of job seekers to Malaysia by boat, Teknaf police raided Katabonia village, from where the job seekers were scheduled to board a boat, the OC said.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers around 6:00am, the traffickers opened fire on them, prompting the police to retaliate with gunfire.
Police in self-defence fired four bullets, the OC said.
During the gunfight, the three policemen were injured while the traffickers, who according to police opened fire on them, managed to flee the scene.
The law enforcers managed to nab Fayez, the OC added.
