3 cops among 14 hurt in bomb blasts
At least 14 people including three cops were injured in petrol and crude bomb attacks in Dhaka University campus, Chittagong and Barisal today.
Also stray incidents of arson and vandalism marked the hartal in Dhaka and Khulna divisions since morning on the first day of the 48-hour hartal sponsored by BNP-led 20-party alliance.
BOMB ATTACKS
In Dhaka University, five people have been injured in separate crude bomb attacks in Hakim Chattar and Central Shaheed Minar areas.
Four people – Wattim, North South University student of BBA, Jakir Hossain and Rasel Alam, Agrani Bank senior officers, and Golam Baki Chowdhury, Bangladesh Chhatra League central committee deputy sports secretary – were injured after unidentified miscreants hurled two crude bombs from a speeding motorcycle in Hakim Chattar area on DU at 7:30pm, said injured Baki.
A rickshaw puller, Salah Uddin, sustained splinter injuries when two more crude bombs were exploded near Central Shaheed Minar area.
All the wounded were given treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, said DMCH outpost police sources.
Meanwhile, Amjad Ali, acting proctor of the university told The Daily Star Online that two crude bombs were blasted at opposite side of the Rokeya Hall and another on in front of the Dutch Bangla Bank booth near TSC area at 7:40pm that left a passer-by injured.
In Chittagong, three on-duty police constables were injured after miscreants hurled two crude bombs at them around 7:30pm, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
Constables Ripon Barua, 36, Farid Uddin, 35 and Ramiz Uddin, 35, were whisked off to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital due to splinter injuries in their legs after crude bombs were targeted to them, Ripon said.
Earlier, at least six passengers including a woman were injured as pro-blockaders hurled a petrol bomb at a bus in Barisal Sadar Upazila early today.
Witnesses said miscreants threw the bomb on a Kuakata-bound bus of Abdullah Paribahan on the Barisal-Patuakhali highway in Khairabad River Bridge area adjacent to Barisal University around 1:15am.
Three firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the blaze, said Rezaul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Barisal Bandar Police Station.
The injured victims were whisked off to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital.
ARSON INCIDENTS
Miscreants set fire to a passenger bus in front of Sony Cinema Hall in Mirpur 2 at 7:55pm and a mini truck at Jatra Bari area at 6:53pm.
Earlier, one private car was torched in Gazipur near Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute around 8:00am, said Enayet Hossain, senior officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense headquarters.
Two crude bombs were blasted in front of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in old Dhaka around 1:15pm, our correspondent reports from the spot. However, no one was injured.
In Khulna, four battery-run human haulers were vandalised at Moulavi Para of Khulna Sadar upazila around 9:00am, our correspondent reports quoting police. One man was detained from the spot.
A clash ensued between the pickets and law enforcers at the scene, said Sukumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station. “The pickets blasted six crude bombs.”
Meanwhile, police detained BNP general secretary of Narayanganj city unit ATM Kamal this morning on charges of subversive activities.
The 20-party alliance enforced the hartal in Dhaka and Khulna divisions for 48 hours and in Sylhet district for 12 hours from 6:00am today, protesting arrest and killing of its leaders and activities throughout the country.
The protest programme underway amid the alliance’s countrywide blockade programme demanding fresh inclusive polls under a nonpartisan body.
At least three vehicles-- a bus in at Trishal in Mymensingh around 1:08am, a bus in Barisal in 1:02am and a truck at Hathazari of Chittagong around 6:30am.
However, intercity buses stayed off the streets.
