22 held while going to Malaysia illegally
Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard detained 22 people from the Bay of Bengal near Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila when they were going to Malaysia illegally early today.
Among the detainees, 11 are from Narshingdi, eight from Sylhet, and three from Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Shahidul Islam, petty officer at coastguard station in Cox’s Bazar, said a patrol team of coastguard intercepted a small boat carrying 22 passengers near the confluence of Banshkhali river and the Bay in Nazirar Tek area around 3:15am.
They were going to Malaysia without any valid documents, the officer said.
Traffickers took around Tk 10,000 to Tk 20,000 from each of the fortune seekers with a promise that they would be sent to Malaysia by a large trawler, the coastguard officer said.
The detainees were handed over to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station.
