2 hurt in Dhaka crude bomb blast
Two more innocents became victims of a crude bomb blast in Old Dhaka today during BNP-led 20-party alliance’s second day of hartal on top of a spell of countrywide blockade.
Thirty-two-year-old rickshaw-puller Abdul Malek and another man Md Ali, 25, were hit by the blasts at Nawabpur area on the way to Chawkbazar, the victims told The Daily Star.
Attending treatments at Dhaka Medical College Hospital bandaged on the head, they cursed their fate.
Doctors say the rickshaw-puller was hit close to his head, but the injury spared his eyes. None of their wounds were very grave.

Meanwhile, police detained 26 activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir in separate crackdowns in Dhaka ahead of the second day’s hartal.
Several teams of Dhaka Metropolitan Police conducted drives in different areas of the city till this morning and arrested the activists on charges of plotting subversive activities, an official of media wing of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told The Daily Star.
Pickets blasted eight crude bombs near the court area in the old part of Dhaka this afternoon Unb adds. The pickets hurled eight crude bombs on Johnson Road and hurriedly left the scene at 12:10pm, witnesses said.
Otherwise, a few incidents of arson marked the second day of the 72-hour countrywide hartal of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, sponsored on top of its nonstop blockade programme.
The only reported incident of violence inside Dhaka city was arson on a bus in Gabtoli area’s Baghbari around 3:23am early today. No one was reported injured.
Apart from this, there was no other incident of arson in the metropolitan in the morning, Mohammad Ali, senior station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense headquarters, told The Daily Star Online.
Elsewhere in the country, two vehicles were torched in Chittagong and Rajbari’s Doulatdia between 1:00am to 8:00am today, Mohammad Ali said.
In Noakhali Sadar, two activists of Shibir were detained with two petrol bombs at Maijdi Napiterpool area this morning.
Rezwan, 22, resident of Noakhali and Al Helal, 23, from Comilla were detained around 9:30am, our Noakhali correspondent reports quoting Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Noakhali Sadar Police Station.
In Rangpur, police arrested 21 activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami-Chhatra-Shibir from different areas of the district until this morning.
Md Abdur Razzak, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Rangpur said, police arrested 7 BNP and 14 Jamaat-Shibir activists on charge of their alleged involvement with subversive activities in the district in the past 24-hours. They were produced before a court before being sent to jail.
At least 39 people have been killed so far, including at least 24 without reported link to politics, in the violence that arose from this year centering the first anniversary of January 5 national elections.
