12 bodies recovered as launch sinks with 200 passengers
At least twelve people drowned as a launch carrying nearly 200 passengers capsized during a nor'wester in the Meghna river in Munshiganj this afternoon.
MV Miraj-4 sank around 3:30pm at Daulatpur in Gazaria upazila on its way to Sureshwar in Shariatpur from Sadarghat, Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Md Saiful Hasan Badal told The Daily Star.
Some passengers managed to swim ashore while many are still missing, he added.
The divers of the cost guards located the ship around 6:45pm and started rescue work, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
Liton, a diver of the cost guard, told a private television channel that he recovered the body of a child from the launch and said many more bodies still remain inside it.
Rescue ships--Protto and Durbar – left Narayanganj for Munshiganj to join the rescue operation.
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan visited the rescue operation.
Three of the bodies were identified as Mamal Hossain, 50, Tumpa Begum, 30, Setara Begum, 50 and Arif, 11.
