11 die as bus hits crowd in Barisal

At least 11 people were killed and 20 injured when a Dhaka coach ploughed through a makeshift market on Dhaka-Barisal highway at Ichhladi in Barisal this afternoon.

The accident occurred when the driver of Hanif Paribahan bus lost control over the steering and hit the crowd at the busy roadside in Wazirpur upazila around 5:50pm, reports our Barisal correspondent.

Nine people died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Wazirpur Police Station.

The deceased are mostly rickshaw-van drivers and small traders at the market. 

Condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical.

However, the passengers of the bus heading to Barisal from Dhaka have remained unhurt.
