11-day ban on hilsa catching, selling
The government has imposed an 11-day ban on catching, selling and transportation of hilsa from October 5 across the country to ensure safe spawning and protect mother fishes.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque made the announcement while talking to reporters before a meeting on preservation of hilsa at Matsya Bhaban in the capital today.
The ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard on September 18.
Since the hilsa lay eggs in plenty during this period (Ashwin-Kartik, five days before and after of Baro Purnima), the government imposed the ban on catching it at four points of the coastal area to preserve the delicious fish.
Law enforcement agencies have been given directives in this regard, said the minister.
