1 killed in BCL factional clash at Sust
An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League was killed and nine others were injured when two factions of the pro-ruling Awami League student body locked in a gun battle at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet this morning.
The deceased, identified as Sumon Roy, is a BBA student at Sylhet International University, our Sylhet correspondent reports.
As panic spread across the campus following the clash, the Sust authorities closed the university sine die and asked its students to leave respective dormitories by 4:00pm today.
The female students have been asked to vacate the halls by tomorrow morning.
Anjan Kumar Das, the incumbent convener of BCL Sust unit, is among the bullet-hit injured who were rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital.
The clash ensued between the supporters of Anjan and Shamsuzzaman Sumon, the former BCL convener of the unit, over establishing supremacy on the campus around 10:45am, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Rahmat Ullah.
Witnesses said the activists locked into the gunfight when the people belonging to Anjan’s faction barred the followers of Shamsuzzaman from entering the campus.
At least 10 gunshots were fired and several crude bombs exploded during the clash spiralling panick among the general students, the witnesses said.
After the clash, the authorities sat in a syndicate meeting and decided to close the university for an indefinite period, said Md Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, vice chancellor of the university.
The admission process for the aspirants of first year honours, which is scheduled to begin from November 25, will start on time, the VC said.
