1 killed, 2 burnt in Sylhet petrol bomb attacks
An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and two truckers suffered burn injuries in separate petrol bomb attacks in Sylhet last night.
The attacks came amid the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s countrywide nonstop blockade.
The deceased was identified as Shahjahan Uddin, 30, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
A Dhaka-bound truck came under the attack on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the city around 10:30pm, witnesses said.
“As a petrol bomb was hurled on the truck, its driver lost control and hit an auto-rickshaw coming from opposite direction before skidding off the road,” said Khairul Fazal, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dakkhin Surma Police Station.
Locals rescued the critically injured auto-rickshaw driver and its three passengers and rushed them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Shahjahan succumbed to his injuries at the hospital around 11:00pm.
Meanwhile, suspected blockaders set fire to a truck in the city’s Ambarkhana area at about 9:00pm.
Miscreants riding motorbikes stopped the limestone-laden truck and torched it. The driver managed to get off the vehicle, said Gausul Hossain, OC of Airport Police Station.
A Chhatak-bound truck caught fire after miscreants threw a petrol bomb in Lamakazi area at Biswanath upazila on Sylhet-Sunamganj road around 11:00pm.
Trucker Hasan has been admitted to the hospital with severe burn injuries.
Hasan suffered 50 percent burns while his younger brother Amin, who was also on the truck, was injured slightly, hospital sources said.
None was arrested in connection with the incidents, police said.
