1,000 trees felled just in 7 days of blockade
Jamaat-Shibir and BNP men felled around 1,000 roadside trees on Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway and six other roads in the district to enforce road blockade in the last seven days.
According to the district council officials, Jamaat-Shibir men felled around eight hundred roadside trees at Bawra, Shafinagar, Sarkerhat, Awliarhat, Beltoli, Burimari, Ala Uddin Nagar and Kafir Bazar areas of Patgram upazila, while BNP men felled 200 roadside trees at Kulghat, Barabari, Khedabag, Fakirertokeya, Mohendranagar, Burirbazar and Indrarpar areas of sadar upazila; Parulia, Goddimari, and Barakhata of Hatibandha upazila; and Kakina, Tushbhandar, Votmari, Chaparhat areas of Kaliganj upazila during the period.
Local people of Kafir Bazar area under Patgram upazila alleged that Jamaat- Shibir men cut down roadside trees to enforce blockade in the upazila in the last three days.
People of Bawra area in the upazila said some blockaders took away the felled trees and sold them to local sawmills.
Patgram Upazila Parishad Chairman Ruhul Amin Babul said the opposition activists felled a large number of roadside trees in different areas of the upazila in a week.
Contacted, district council officials said they will soon filed cases with the police stations concerned against the persons responsible for felling the roadside trees.
