4 hurt as ‘BNP men’ attack AL procession; petrol bombs hurled

Four Awami League men were injured as BNP men allegedly attacked an election procession brought out by the supporters of the AL candidate for Chattogram-4 constituency in Sitakunda area of the district this morning.

The injured were identified as Mohammad Abu Saleh Shamsuddin, Mohammad Saddam Hossain, Mohammad Raihan and Tayeb Uddin, said Assistant Sub-inspector Alauddin Talukdar of Chittagong Medical College Hospital Police outpost.

WHAT HAPPENED?

AL candidate for Chattogram-4 Didarul Alam was campaigning in Jhanabad area of Chattogram when suspected BNP men launched an “attack” on the rally around 11:00am, said officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station Delwar Hossain.

They also hurled one or two petrol bombs at the rally, the OC said.

Among the injured, three received minor burns and are being treated at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

However, BNP candidate for the same constituency, Ishaque Quader Chowdhury, denied the allegations.

WHAT DID DIDARUL ALAM SAY ABOUT THE ATTACK?

“They (attackers) mainly attacked the procession in an attempt to kill me,” Didarul told The Daily Star when he was visiting the injured at the hospital.

He also claimed that ten people were injured in the attack and five are now being treated at the hospital.
