‘We have to disappear if Argentina don’t do well’
Lionel Messi talked about the Argentina national team and their quest for World Cup glory in the Russia World Cup.
The mercurial playmaker was aware of Argentina’s complications and conceeded that there are better teams in the competition. However, he was hopeful that Sampaoli’s team can improve as they will have a month to work on their game before the tournament begins.
“We went through a tough spell. But it’s true that we have to improve if we aspire to be world champions. I think that we have time to improve in these games and before the World Cup. when we’ll have a month to put everything in order before the start. As we are today, we are not far from that although there are better teams than us such as Brazil, Germany, France and Spain.
Messi still felt bitter at having lost the two Copa America finals and the World Cup 2014 final. "It hurts a lot to have gone to three finals and be so criticised. We are the first ones to want to win with the national team. Playing in Argentina is an added pressure for this group that is criticized so much. It’s much more difficult for us to play at home than on the road."
The Argentine felt that bitterness has led to a certain kind of burden that is not easy to deal with and said: “If Argentina don’t do well in this World Cup, we will all have to disappear from the national team.”
He felt that people are getting tired of seeing the same faces in the national side. Maybe the Argentine knows that a fear of failure can ignite Argentine spirits and disappearing from the national setup is a reality that is very much real.
