Jhalakathi BCL leader held for 'land grab attempt'
A local BCL leader and three others were arrested in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi early today after they allegedly attacked a family and injured seven people mostly women “with an intention to grab land”.
Police arrested Ahsan Habib Rubel, president of the upazila unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), his mother and two of his supporters from the scene, our Jhalakathi correspondent reports quoting police.
The victims were preparing to file cases in the afternoon bringing allegations of extortion, land grabbing, women repression and looting charges against them, police said.
Earlier, the BCL leader’s father Tofazzal Hossain was sued in several cases in connection with the land grabbing, said Sheikh Monirul Gias, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajapur Police Station.
Among the seven injured people, condition of three is critical. The injured people were rushed to Rajapur Health Complex, the OC said.
They were hacked with sharp weapons and beaten up indiscriminately in the attack, he added.
A group of 50-60 people led by Rubel attacked their house on College Road in the upazila town around 4:00am and looted and vandalised valuables, the victim and house owner, Shahera Begum, said.
The attackers drove them out of the house and occupied it, she added.
Rubel had been asking the family to pay Tk 10 lakh if they want to live in the house, alleged Shahera whose husband is a businessman and stays in Dhaka.
But they did not pay the money to Rubel as they are the rightful owner of the land, Shahera, a mother of three children, said.
Additional policemen have been seen deployed at the spot to avert further occurrences, the correspondent said.
