BCL run riot at DU hall overnight
Bangladesh Chhatra League activists went on rampage at Bijoy Ekattor Hall in Dhaka University early today trying to give space to their supporters forcefully.
They chased away resident teachers, vandalised the office room of the hall provost, beat up a campus reporter and terrorised general students for hours overnight, our DU correspondent reports.
The rampage was led by Bijoy Ekattor Hall Chhatra League President Fakir Rasel and Secretary Nayan Hawlader, a resident teacher told The Daily Star on condition of anonymity.
The hall’s Provost Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan told The Daily Star that the Chhatra League activists vandalised his office room in front of him when he tried to calm down the situation.
According to sources, this five-year-old hall was the only one in the university where the hall authorities have sole power in allotting spaces for students.
Last night, Chhatra League tried to break the tradition. The rampage went on from midnight until 4:00am, witnesses said. UNB campus reporter Imran Hossain was physically assaulted.
None of the accused BCL leaders could be reached over phone. However, Dhaka University central BCL President Abid Al Hassan said that organisational actions will be taken against those responsible.
