PM returned from India with empty hands: Khaleda
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia today termed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent four-day visit to India as “unsuccessful”.
‘She [Hasina] came back with empty hands. She brought nothing but assurances to the countrymen,” the former prime minister said.
Khaleda came up with the formal reaction at a press conference at her Gulshan office in Dhaka this afternoon, a day into the prime minister briefed media on the outcome of her India tour.
“The people of Bangladesh would not be happy with just how well the PM was treated during her visit, rather they want to know what we have achieved from the visit,” Khaleda said.
In reply to a query, the former premier said she will do everything necessary including reviewing the agreements and MoUs signed with India for the interest of the country if she comes in power.
Asked whether BNP will wage any movement in protest of the agreements and MoUs, Khaleda said her today’s press conference was also a part of movement against the treaties signed with India, adding that their resistance as well as agitation will also continue in the days to come.
“People must wake up against the way the present government is running the country. We are in a movement and will continue it,” Khaleda said.
In reply to another query, the former opposition leader said as they are not in power, they cannot raise the Teesta water sharing issue to international forums.
“Rather it is the government’s duty to raise the issue to international platforms,” Khaleda observed.
Referring to PM Sheikh Hasina’s Tuesday’s remarks that BNP was reacting sharply for signing agreements with our friendly neighboring country India that helped in our Liberation War, Khaleda said BNP will always speak in favour of the country’s interest and will protest always if any treaties are signed with other countries, not just with India, that go against the interest of the country and its people.
