Star Online Report

O- and A-level examinations will be held today and tomorrow in districts where there is no hartal. Examinations in Dhaka and Khulna divisions have been cancelled.
The examinees will not be able to sit for the examinations in this session with this cancellation, a British Council source in Dhaka told The Daily Star this evening.
Examinations of eight subjects, four in each levels, have been cancelled, the source said.
The 20-party alliance enforced the hartal in Dhaka and Khulna divisions for 48 hours and in Sylhet district for 12 hours from 6:00am today, protesting arrest and killing of its leaders and activities throughout the country.
Stray incidents of arson and vandalism marked the hartal in Dhaka and Khulna divisions this morning on the first day of the 48-hour hartal sponsored by the opposition alliance.
The protest programme underway amid the alliance’s countrywide blockade programme demanding fresh inclusive polls under a nonpartisan body.
Meanwhile, hours after the authorities’ decision of cancelling O- and A-level examinations, the BNP-led-20-party alliance said their hartal and blockade will continue until further notice, but the ongoing O-level examinations will be outside its purview.
In a press release issued this evening, signed under by BNP Vice Chairman Selima Rahman, this announcement has been made.
The statement also said that O-level examinees from 8:00pm Thursday to 6:00am Friday will be outside the purview of the hartal and blockade programmes.
But it did not mention to keep the vehicles which will carry the examinees outside the purview of the hartal and blockade.
