Roof Collapse: 3 construction workers killed in Savar
Three construction workers were killed as the under-construction roof of a food processing factory collapsed on them in Ashulia on the outskirts of capital yesterday.
The dead are Jalal Uddin, 60, Shahidul Islam, 50, and Jahangir Hossain, 50.
Police, quoting witnesses, said some 14 labourers were working at the construction site of Primar Foods and Drink Ltd at Zirabo around 2:30pm.
All of a sudden, the roof collapsed on the three, leaving them trapped under the rubble.
Co-workers soon pulled the victims out of debris and sent them to Enam Medical College Hospital and Savar Super Clinic.
Dr Imamuzzaman Reza said Jalal and Shahidul were brought dead to the hospital.
According to construction workers, Jahangir died at the hospital.
Rescuers from DEPZ (Dhaka Export Processing Zone) fire service station went to the construction site and searched through the debris to make sure none was trapped under rubble.
Abdul Hamid, senior station officer at the fire service station, said they winded up the rescue operation around 4:00pm.
Sheikh Md Abdullah, a director of the factory, said they were probing the incident. Action would be taken against the contractor if any negligence in the construction work was found responsible for the accident, he added.
Workers said contractor Sirazul Islam fled the site soon after the accident. This correspondent could not reach the contractor as his phone was switched off.
Ashulia police sent the three bodies to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsies. Top officials of Dhaka district police visited the spot.
