10-yr-old dies of torture
A 10-year-old boy died after some workers allegedly pumped air into his body through the rectum at a factory in Narayanganj yesterday, in an incident that harks back to the murder of Rakib in Khulna last year.
Sagar Barman used to work at the factory -- Zobeda Textile and Spinning Mills -- in Jatramura area of Rupganj.
Sagar's father Ratan Barman, who also works at the factory, alleged that some factory workers inserted an air pump nozzle into his son's rectum and filled his body with air, making him sick.
The boy was found lying beside a compressor inside the factory around 1:30pm, he told local journalists.
Critically injured Sagar was rushed to a local clinic in Kanchpur area. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he was declared dead, said the father.
Ratan, who is from Rajibpur village of Khaliajuri upazila in Netrakona, has absolutely no idea why his son was killed that way.
Talking to journalists at the hospital, DMCH's emergency unit medical officer Firoz Ahmed said the boy's abdomen was “abnormally swollen” before he died around 3:30pm.
“It appears that he died as air was pumped into his body through the rectum. But the actual reason of his death could be known only after the autopsy,” he added.
Contacted, Forkan Shikder, assistant superintendent of police in Narayanganj, said they have visited the factory.
Additional SP of Narayanganj (crime) Matiar Rahman said they detained “a few” from the factory for interrogation.
Locals said a good number of children work at the factory.
Zobeda Group Managing Director Lion Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan could not be contacted for comments despite repeated attempts.
No case was filed over the incident until last night.
Police said they were investigating.
In August last year, 13-year-old Rakib was killed in a similar fashion for leaving his garage job in Khulna.
