SC clears way for Ctg cocaine haul trial

Bangladesh’s apex court today cleared way for resuming trial proceedings of liquid cocaine haul case at Chittagong port back in 2015.

The apex court stayed a High Court order, that earlier this month had halted the trial of the case, and ordered the lower court to complete the trial in six months.

It also ordered Khan Jahan Ali Limited Chairman Nur Mohammad, an accused in the case, to surrender before the lower court in three weeks.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah, who is performing the duties of the chief justice, came up with the order following a government petition moved by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam seeking stay on the High Court order.

The customs intelligence detected the cocaine inside a barrel that weighed 185 kg, which was imported from Bolivia along with 106 other barrels on May 12, 2015.

The other barrels reportedly carried sunflower oil.

A case was filed with Bandar Police Station on June 27 that year in connection with the seizure.
