Abducted RU student rescued in Dhaka

The Rajshahi University student, who was kidnapped from the campus allegedly by her former husband, was rescued from Dhaka today.

Rajshahi law enforcers rescued the girl from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area with the help of local police early today.

They also arrested the former husband Shohel from the spot, reports our Rajshahi correspondent quoting police.

Confirming the incident, Iftekhayer Alam, assistant police commissioner of Rajshahi, told The Daily Star that details will be disclosed at a press conference later in the day.

Earlier around 12:30pm, the RU students threatened to go for tougher agitation if the university authorities fail to rescue their abducted fellow classmate by two hours.

The students issued the ultimatum from a human chain formed in front of the Central Library of the university, reports our RU correspondent.

Almost 300 female students organised a peaceful rally that paraded the entire campus. Various students’ political groups like Bangladesh Chhatra League and Chhatra Union also joined them.

The fourth-year Bangla student was abducted by her former husband, Shohel Rana, of Naogaon from the university campus around 8:30am yesterday.

The abductor forced her into a microbus in front of Taposhi Rabeya Hall when she went out of her dormitory to appear at final examination around 9:00am, said witnesses.

According to the family of the student, she got married to Shohel in December last year, but they got divorced two months back.

The student's father filed an abduction case against Shohel, his father, and four of his family members, Officer-in-Charge of Motihar Police Station Mehedi Hasan. Quoting police, the proctor said Shohel's father was arrested in Naogaon.
