In-laws throw acid on housewife

A housewife sustained serious acid burns when in-laws threw acid on her on Saturday as she asked for the money they owed her.

Shirin Begum, 35, who was undergoing treatment at Patuakhali General Hospital since Saturday, was sent to Acid Survivors Foundation in the capital yesterday for better treatment with the support of non-governmental organisation Brac.

Victim's son filed a case with Patuakhali Police Station accusing three people, including his uncle Abdul Latif and his son Imran on Saturday night.

According to the case statement, Shirin, wife of Abu Taleb of Gabtali village in Barguna Sadar upazila, works as a maid at Atroshi Darbar Sharif in Faridpur.

Her two children Rahat, 14, and Tamanna, 10, live in a house at Banani in Dhaka owned by the Darbar and study there as their father does not take care of them.

Couple of years ago, Shirin lent her husband's elder brother Latif, 55, Tk 50,000 and asked for the money recently, which triggered a feud among them.

Failing to realise the money Shirin filed a case with a Patuakhali court against Latif a few months ago.

Last week, Latif, his son Imran and neighbour Nazrul went to Atroshi Darbar and invited Shirin to come to Patuakhali, saying that  he will pay the debt in presence of their lawyer.

Accordingly, when Shirin reached near Patuakhali DC office area the trio hurled acid on her face and fled the scene.

Locals rushed her to Patuakhali General Hospital.

Dr Mahbub Hossain, medical officer at the hospital, said the victim suffered serious acid burns on her face, thorax and left hand.
